DOCTORS DIE BETTER THAN YOU...REALLY THEY DO.

Doctors do die differently and here's the data to back it up. This is a follow up to a previous controversial article that doctors die "better" than their patients. By better I mean in their own beds, surrounded by family and not puking from chemo. This is something that everyone, without exceptions, should read and act on. I'll give you my insights on why this is so true tomorrow on the show.

DOCTORS & YOUR SECRETS

Doctors and your secrets - is it ever a good idea for a doctor to tell your spouse or family member what's wrong with you even if you don't want them to? HIPAA of course is the law that forbids this and has heavy fines for any doctor who betrays a patient's confidentiality BUT what if you have a communicable, life threatening illness AND you aren't dishing? In fact even if the doctor advises that you should, forget should, MUST tell your partner you have the final say. It's all up to you and a surprising number don't dish until it's way too late.

This Saturday July 28th 6-8 AM on Dr. Chambers On Call on KFWB News Talk 980 I'll talk about my experience with this thorny complex scenario. My advice may make you that bit more inquisitive about your partner's health and it may just save you from a bucket of pain.

Show NOTES JULY 21st 2012

PROSTATE CANCER:

A new study showed "watchful waiting" i.e. doing nothing was just as good as surgery in men with early prostate cancer. And I totally agree.

OBESITY DRUGS:

Two new drugs, Belviq & Qsymia, approved in the treatment of obesity. Not a big fan and would advise wait and see what side effects emerge after out on the marker for a year or two.

THE BRADY CENTER TO PRVENT GUN VIOLENCE

Jim and Sarah Brady's statement on the Aurora violence:

"We are praying for the victims and their families in Aurora and understand the pain they are feeling and will feel for years to come.

Congress has done nothing since the mid-1990s to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. We pledge to keep fighting the NRA and entire gun lobby in an effort to strengthen our background checks to include all firearm purchases, ban assault clips with large magazines that enable mass killers, and to make it more difficult to obtain concealed carry permits.

Every person who agrees with us needs to contact their individual representatives and senators and let them know you are outraged over their caving to the gun lobby. Do it today and do it often in the future. Letters to your local newspaper are a big help as well. Be sure to get your friends and families involved in our efforts too.

We can win this fight, with your voices and your action."

Amen!

SHOW NOTES JULY 21st 2012

Gestational Diabetes - pregnancy induced diabetes:

Tight control of diabetes is extremely important.

  • Aim for fasting glucose < 100mg/dl
  • Aim for hgbA1c < 7%

The same applies if you're diabetic, tight control is important not only during your pregnancy but also before you're pregnant.  Tightening control before you're pregnant means less miscarriages and newborn problems.

What's normal weight gain in pregnancy?

It depends what you weighed before the pregancy and has to be individualized.  Check out this table from the Mayo Clinic

Pre-pregnancy weightRecommended weight gain
Underweight (BMI less than 18.5) 28 to 40 pounds (about 13 to 18 kilograms)
Normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9) 25 to 35 pounds (about 11 to 16 kilograms)
Overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9) 15 to 25 pounds (about 7 to 11 kilograms)
Obese (BMI 30 or more) 11 to 20 pounds (about 5 to 9 kilograms)
