THE SHOW JULY 21ST - FIRST HOUR PART 1
"SOOTHING WORDS" & GUNS AS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE
Truer words were never spoken. Kudos To mayor Bloomberg for talking about the elephant in the room, lack of gun control, with the awful Colorado shooting. "Soothing words" is what's usually on offer after these tragedies but it's not enough. We need more. We need action. Gun control is a public health issue no different than cigarettes or sugar. They all kill.

SHOW NOTES FROM JULY 14: 2012 - PART 2
Diabetes diagnosis:
A caller last Saturday was confused about whether she had diabetes or not. She was using her husband's glucometer to test herself. What she found was a marginally elevated blood sugar that was not confirmed in her doctor's office. Her hgbA1c was also in the normal range. She is not diabetic. For a variety of reasons finger stick measurements vary compared to tests from your doctor's lab. Bottom line: Diagnosis of diabetes is never made from finger sticks.
Diabetes diagnosis - lab values only:
- Fasting blood sugar greater than or equal to 126 mg/dl
- Casual plasma glucose greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl with symptoms - excessive thirst or urination.
- HgbA1c greater than or equal to 6.5%
- 2 hour plasma glucose greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl after a 75-gm glucose load.
AN IRISH MAN AND BASEBALL
Met the Dodger pitching great and and last year's Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw at the game last Saturday. Thanks to CBS for the great seats and setting up the meet and greet.
It was a really fun night until the Padres 'stole" the end. That's why we all love sports...you just don't know what's going to happen until it happens.
