THE SCOURGE OF BACK PAIN

This is disappointing if not unexpected news in the fight against back pain. Steroid injections are really no better than placebo - in other words you might as well do nothing than have someone stick a needle full of steroids in your back. And doing nothing let me tell you is a whole lot less risky and cheaper.

So what do you do if you have back pain? Use anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or naproxen, do back stretches religiously and above all give it TIME. In 4-6 weeks or sooner you'll be better. I promise you.

DEBT COLLECTORS MASQUERADE AS HOSPITAL STAFF

Ever wonder why anyone who shows up at an ER must be treated? The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is an unfunded Federal law that forces ER's to treat anybody that shows up on their door step. No insurance - you're treated. No money - you're treated.

Ever wonder who pays? Community hospitals. EMTALA cost community hospitals almost $40 billion in 2010. Now they're hitting back. Now they're allowing debt collectors to masquerade as ER staff to bully the sick and squeeze them for every last cent BEFORE they get treated. I understand the frustration of the hospitals. I understand someone must pay. But c'mon, we spend two trillion a year on health care. Two trillion! Yet here we are harassing the sick and the dying in emergency rooms. Jesus wept. Health reform NOW!!!

THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME!!!

Vice President Cheney is alive today thanks to modern medical technology and you have to admit luck. Even when the technology is brilliant and the doctor's superb you can't cheat death five times without lady luck. No question we've come a long way in understanding and treating heart disease in the last fifty years - from First Lady Mamie Eisenhower being urged by the White House doctor to cuddle President Eisenhower to keep him warm during his heart attack up to a brand new, spanking heart for VP Cheney. Yeah we've come a long way alright. Still, the best treatment is NO treatment. That's right. You heard me. Avoid it. Avoid it all. You can. How? Don't smoke. Watch your weight. Exercise. Otherwise you'll end up being Vice President Cheney with five heart attacks. And you may not be as lucky as him.

OVER TREATMENT...IT'S EVERYWHERE!!!

Over treatment is not just a problem in the medical world. I think it's just as rampant in talk therapy. As this article illustrates some therapists will let it go on forever. Of course they have a financial incentive to let it go on and on and on. You don't. I have friends who literally have been in therapy for a decade or more. At this point it's like a weekly catch up with a buddy except it costs them a few hundred bucks. It's not therapy, it's co-dependence.

How do you avoid this? First off, choose your therapist wisely. Personality fit between you and your therapist is even more important than with your regular doctor. Keep in mind the first visit is a job interview. That's right, a job interview. You're hiring the therapist. You're interviewing the therapist to see IF they're a good fit. No chemistry between you and them, forget it. Second, ask them what's the plan? How long do they see this going on? How long before you see results? For most people with anxiety or mild depression results, not cure, should be seen within six to eight weeks. Third, like any relationship, you must assess it frequently, say at the end of every month to see if it's doing what you want/need. Finally, if every time you leave your therapists office you feel great, this is not good. It means you're not facing the hard stuff and or making the decisions you need to make to get psychologically well again.

More about this on the show next Saturday.

FESTIVAL OF BOOKS USC SATURDAY APRIL 20

David Wilson and I will also interview Julie Guthman about her new book Weighing In. She argues that our obesity epidemic is a consequence of a "political economy of bulimia". Say what?!? That's my first question - political economy of what? Ms. Guthman's interview will be at 4:30.

WHO'S TO BLAME FOR THE HEALTH CARE MESS?

Who's to blame for the health care mess? We all are - every single one of us. This book, "How we do harm: A Doctor Breaks Ranks About Being Sick In America" by Dr. Otis Brawley, says it all . It's what I've been saying on the show from the get go. He believes, like me, that more health care is not better health care and that some patients are "gluttonous" in their consumption of health care and some doctors are simply "greedy" and do "stuff" for the money.

There is hope though. Educate yourself on what you need and don't need. It's why I do the show every Saturday morning 6-8 AM on KFWB News Talk 980 to empower you.

WARREN BUFFET - OH NO HE DIDN'T!!!

Apparently 81 years old Warren Buffet has prostate cancer. This news is not as sad as it first appears. The chances that prostate cancer will kill Mr. Buffet is remote. Something else will long before then. What is sad is that a man as smart as Mr. Buffet let his doctors do the notoriously unreliable PSA blood test looking for prostate cancer. Why?

There is NO evidence that screening men older than 75 with a PSA test does them any good. What it does do is put them at risk for biopsies and treatments that can cause pain, impotence and incontinence. The realty is autopsies show 70% of all men who die in their eighties have cancer in their prostates. Meaning prostate cancer is common in that age group and it's of no consequence. Berkshire Hathaway's  investors sensibly yawned. Mr. Buffet is mortal like the rest of us but his investors realized this is non-news. If only his doctors were as smart.

FESTIVAL OF BOOKS USC SATURDAY APRIL 20

KFWB is live this weekend at the LAT Festival of Books on the USC campus. So as well as my regular show 6-8 AM tomorrow from the studio I'll be co-hosting with David Wilson the 4-5 PM slot from USC. Our special guest is author/reporter Joel Achenbach from the Washington Post. We'll be discussing his new book, A Hole At The Bottom of the Sea: The Race to Kill the BP Oil Gusher. If you're at the festival swing by and say hello.  We'd love to see you.

FOOD DESERTS A MYTH?

New studies seem to imply that food deserts are a myth. Healthy food is apparently plentiful even in inner cities where fast food outlets are in abundance. Also it's not just a question of are there full service restaurants and supermarkets but what are they serving/selling. A full service restaurant may serve up veggies but if they're smothered with cheese they're not exactly healthy.

As I've said many times on the show, you are what you eat so even if fresh produce is available you have to actually eat it and skip the fast food outlet.

THE SHOW THIS SATURDAY - SEX IN AMERICA

On the show this Saturday, sex in America in 2012. The facts belie the media myth. Also has Craigslist caused a surge in STD's and made us promiscuous? Apparently yes - promiscuity hasn't been this popular since the 70's BUT that was pre-HIV. And even with the University of Google does sex ed in America suck? In many ways it's not the lack of information but the disinformation that's most scary. What you need to know to survive this new "sex surge" and the bad info AND as always your calls - starring you and whatever's on your mind about your health.
